Levens School- Modular
This new modular building was commissioned using the Roland Hill Ltd modular building system. Unlike other more standard modular systems, the Roland Hill design lends itself to very bespoke designs. This meant that a very architecturally pleasing design was adopted. Detailed design, taking into account the school requirements, access to the school site, site constraints etc. resulted in the building now completed on site.
The major on-site activities (excluding the demolition of the old kitchen) took only seven weeks from start of the groundworks to the handover of the building, with the school Christmas lunch being virtually the first meal served! The school are delighted with the building, especially the way in which the kitchen and the dining room are directly connected. There is a large servery, and the kitchen is fully visible to the pupils through this. Added to this is the look and feel of the building. Internally there are large amounts of natural light, and the building is well ventilated with good services. Externally the look of the building is very contemporary, with a mixture of cedar cladding and through coloured render. Finally, the access ramp gives all-inclusive building access and is finished with stainless steel handrailing and glass balustrading. This modern look of the new building compliments the traditional design of the school, being originally Victorian. It allows the history of the whole site to be further told through the design and look of all the buildings.
The school are so pleased with the overall feel, look and execution of the building that they feel there will be a significant increase in the uptake of school dinners and the nutritional value that they can offer to all the pupils. This should lead to increased learning effectiveness and a greater promotion of community and belonging within the school.
